using a planer to remove ash

I just wanted to do a quick post on how things are going with my acrylic bar planer (a picture of it is here).  I've used it a handful of times now and am getting the hang of it.  One thing I noticed is that I get better results with the planer by waiting for the bars to firm up first....this can be an extra day or two after cutting (even if the batch has gelled).  Also, for my soaps with smooth tops, I like using the planer to remove ash...here are a couple of pictures demonstrating that:

In the picture below, the bar on the left has a light layer of ash.  The bar on the right has been planed, removing the ash.

A close-up of the top ashy layer that was planed...it's a very light, thin layer.

  1. I've thought about picking up a planer from SMR for uses like this. Thanks for the update!

    1. You're welcome, Laura! I wanted to get the planer for straightening out the tops of my bars, and it's great for that. Before, I would just cut off the tops...and usually cut a little too much off, whereas the planer takes off a little at a time...and it's so handy to use for removing ash!

  3. What a great way to get rid of the soda ash! I've also taken an old nylon and cold water to wash it off as well. =)

  4. Pretty soap, Kalla! It's nice that the planer can remove ash without taking too much soap with it. It did a very nice, clean job. I usually use steam to get rid of ash and that works well, too.
