new bar planer...and other goodies

Well, all of my packages arrived except for one...looks like sometime next week is when I should be getting it.  In the meantime, I thought I'd share pics of the items I bought from two companies that I've never ordered from before...Soap Making Resource and Coastal Scents.

First up is Soap Making Resource.  I ordered lemongrass herb and an acrylic soap beveler/planer.  I've been wanting a bar planer for some time now, and I hope this will give me good results.

 lemongrass and freebies

I ordered the smallest size I could of  lemongrass and it's quite a lot (for my needs anyway)...it'll last me forever!   The freebies next to the lemongrass are eucalyptus leaves, annato seeds and cruelty free tussah silk.  I'm looking forward to trying the tussah silk...I've read many times about how great it is to use in soap.

Next is Coastal Scents.  I had actually never heard of this company before until someone on a forum mentioned a sale they were having (thank you seibert7kids!).  It's interesting to see the butters so nicely packaged, especially the cocoa butter.

I ordered only two pounds of unrefined shea butter because I haven't used it before. I've always heard of the "off-putting" smell it has.  I opened a package to see, or smell, and it does have a smoky odor to it, but I don't think it's really all that bad.  I rubbed a little bit of it into my hands and it spread nicely..and the smell does go away after a bit. I'm going to make a whipped butter with it and see how I like it.

Two bottles of sweet almond oil are behind the butters...haven't ordered SAO in a long time, but I like to use it in lotion bars and lip balm.

colorants

1 oz. each of Red Iron Oxide, Ultramarine Violet and Chromium Green Oxide.   I figured I'd grab a few colors to try because I don't have very many..and they were on sale ($1.74-$1.77 each).

freebies

The extra goodies:  an 'I love makeup' sticker and an eye shadow sample.

I'm extremely pleased with everything I ordered...and was very impressed with the way BOTH companies took great care in packaging every item.

  1. Great haul! I have the planer and just a word of advice....it worked great until I nicked the 'blade' area while trying to get some stuck soap out. Yes, I used a knife which wasn't my brightest idea of the day, but I used a very light hand. So it is a great planer, just be careful since you can't replace the blade like a wood planer. Enjoy!

    1. That's great to know, Holly...thanks so much! I'll be sure to use caution when I start using it. I didn't come up with a whole lot of reviews on it...the couple I did find, the users seemed to like theirs. My concern is just what you had mentioned...about not being able to replace the blade, so I really hope it lasts! :)

    2. You're welcome. After I damaged mine, I asked someone I knew that had one how they care for their planer. (A little late I know, ha!) She said that she is super gentle and is even cautious about using a rough rag when washing it, etc.. I think it will be awesome for you, just treat it like a child. ;-)

  2. Wow, sweet freebies from both places Kalla! Cool planer too, can't wait to see what you think of it! I'm totally drooling over those butters...I need to check out Coastal Scents, have you tried any of their fragrances?

    1. I love the freebies...I thought the freebies from SMR were pretty generous! I can't wait to use the planer...I'll definitely do an update on it after I use it a few times. No, I didn't order any fragrances from Coastal Scents because I had already ordered a bunch of fragrances from other companies. They say their FOs can be used in soap, so I think I might try them the next time I place an order with them.

  3. Looks like a great haul, Kalla! The freebies are nice, too. I haven't ordered from Coastal Scents, but I have placed several orders with Soap Making Resource. I bought a couple of molds (a wooden log mold and an acrylic slab mold, which I love) and a bunch of essential oils from SMR. I got a sample of the silk, too, and I have to remember to use it someday. Have fun with your planer and other goodies!

    1. Their eyeshadow is awesome! I lean towards the neutrals..I've been using the top left and bottom right colors in the sample I got. The quality is excellent...definitely WAY better than what I've been using (cheap store-bought lol). :)

  6. Great haul! I love unrefined shea butter for my soap, but I have never been able to get nice whipped shea from it. I think that is better done with the white refined butter, but I am not an expert s perhaps I haven't been making it correctly. Look forward to seeing how yours turns out.

    1. Really? I'll make a smaller batch then in case it doesn't turn out. I'm looking forward to using it in soap, too...glad you're loving it in yours!
