altering an item to use for home decor

another oldie but goodie from the other blog that I want here:

I had some spaces on my bookshelves that needed filling up...and as I was staring at them thinking of ideas, I remembered the round gift box that was stored in my closet. I got it for Christmas one year...I think bath and body products were in it, not sure...but I didn't want to throw the box away because it was good-sized...11 inches in diameter...and I could definitely use it for something!

So as I'm thinking about the colors of the room...which are dark, rich browns...I'm also thinking of scrapbook papers I have that will blend in with the color scheme. After I picked out the papers and found coordinating ribbon, it was time to create!

Here is what the gift box looked like BEFORE:

Here is the box AFTER:

I created a "buckle" to finish off the box: I cut out a rectangle using coordinating paper and rounded the corners. I used my Cricut to cut out an additional small circle and a flower. I then used chalk ink on the edges of the three cutouts...then layered them on top of each other and added a pearl to the center. I also lifted and bent the flower petals up to give it a little dimension.

Here is the altered gift box on my bookshelf...perfect for holding photos and other odds and ends!
